Each collagen fiber has bundles of fibrils, within which are bundles of microfibrils, themselves composed of tropocollagen units formed from the association of three \u03b1-chains in a helical structure. The complex collagen structure is maintained by numerous hydrogen and covalent bonds within and between tropocollagen molecules.<\/span><\/p><p>The \u03b1-chain itself is composed of 33% glycine (every 3 residues), 12% proline, 11% alanine, and 9% hydroxyproline.
